James has dedicated the past three decades to his personal recovery journey, overcoming adversity and emerging stronger than ever. At the age of 21, he made the courageous decision to seek help and checked himself into the Van Ness recovery house in Hollywood, CA. Successfully completing the program, James remained substance-free for a decade, during which he pursued his education and obtained licensing in cosmetology. This marked the beginning of a remarkable 32-year career in the industry, where James excelled and honed his skills through extensive training at prestigious institutions like Bumble & Bumble University in New York.

While James experienced a period of relapse along his path, he was fortunate to find his way back to recovery and rebuild his life. He founded his own business, Tease Salon & Day Spa, in Portland, OR, and dedicated 15 years to his ongoing recovery journey. In 2019, James faced an unimaginable tragedy—the loss of an intelligent, loving, and beautiful young man to suicide. Given the limited information he had at the time, he felt a sense of responsibility that led to a four-year battle with substance abuse and grappling with the harsh realities of life. Thankfully, this difficult period ultimately led him back to recovery, where he found the strength to not only survive but also confront the misunderstandings surrounding spirituality.

Now, James is channeling his unwavering determination and personal experiences into a remarkable endeavor—the creation of The Betty Bubble Scholarships for Sobriety. Through this initiative, he aims to provide individuals who cannot afford the opportunity for recovery with a chance to heal and rebuild their lives. James understands firsthand the transformative power of receiving support when it is most needed, and he is determined to extend that lifeline to others who find themselves in similar circumstances.
