For three decades, Charles Robbins held executive leadership positions with national and local nonprofit organizations providing primary care, behavioral health, substance use disorder, and social services. With more than 30 years of recovery from stimulant and alcohol use disorder, Charles possesses extensive knowledge of evidence-based drug and alcohol treatment and prevention programs. His vast experience includes working with vulnerable/at-risk populations including people living with HIV and individuals who identify as LGBTQ.
Charles is a consultant with Health Management Associates (HMA), a nationally recognized firm that specializes in safety-net healthcare and social services. Of particular note, he recently conducted a strategic planning process for Los Angeles County’s Substance Abuse Prevention and Control. He has been a team lead for three multi-county State Opioid Response (SOR) grants focused on medications for addiction treatment (MAT) in California. He also developed a 12-hour workforce development training program on behalf of the State of Minnesota Department of Human Services entitled The Intersection of HIV and Substance Use Disorder: Enhancing the Care Continuum with Evidence-Based Practices.
Charles joined HMA from a federally qualified health center providing healthcare and social services to the HIV, LGBTQ, and low-income populations in Los Angeles. His professional experience includes serving as vice president at a large Los Angeles based behavioral health and child welfare agency. Prior, he served as the CEO of The Trevor Project, a national LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention organization. He began his extensive non-profit career in 1991 when he founded a home-delivered meal program for people with AIDS in Denver, Colorado.
He has served on the board of directors for the Palm Springs LGBT Center and The Village Family Services in Los Angeles. Charles holds an MBA in healthcare management from Western Governors University and a certificate in nonprofit administration from the University of Colorado, Denver.
